Shockwave Therapy: Revolutionary Pain Relief and Healing – Available from January 2025

WHAT IS SHOCKWAVE THERAPY?

Shockwave therapy involves the use of acoustic pressure waves to provide pain relief and promote healing in the muscle and skeletal structures. It is most commonly used to treat conditions in the lower limbs, ankles, and feet. At Midtown Wellness Clinic, we use the STORZ MASTERPULS® ultra+ shockwave, one of the most advanced shockwave devices on the market, offering exceptional results. Our highly trained physiotherapists and osteopaths perform the treatments, and they are covered by Bupa, AXA, WPA, Healix, Vitality, and all major health insurances.

Shockwave therapy stimulates the body’s natural healing process by enhancing circulation and providing immediate pain relief. Clinical studies and evidence-based medicine have demonstrated its effectiveness in accelerating the healing of soft tissue injuries.

How Does Shockwave Therapy Work?

The primary goals of shockwave therapy are to desensitize nerve endings, leading to an immediate reduction in pain, and to induce controlled micro-trauma to the tissues. This micro-trauma activates the body’s natural healing response, enabling it to repair soft tissue damage in the targeted area.

Main objectives of the treatment include:

  • Reduction of chronic pain sensation

  • Blockade of neurogenic inflammation

  • Activation of mesenchymal stem cells (bone cells), which stimulate healing

  • Improved blood circulation in the treated area

The procedure is straightforward: your therapist will apply a small amount of gel to the treatment area to help the shockwaves penetrate the tissue. Then, using a small handheld device, shockwaves are delivered to the affected area. Many patients report the treatment as painless, although some may experience mild discomfort. Your therapist will adjust the settings as necessary to ensure you are as comfortable as possible while maximizing the effectiveness of the treatment.

Our Approach to Shockwave Therapy

At Midtown Wellness Clinic, our team of physiotherapists and osteopaths will first conduct a thorough assessment before recommending shockwave therapy. While this treatment is highly effective for certain conditions, it may not be suitable for others. If you have received a referral for shockwave treatment directly from a medical doctor without a prior assessment by one of our physiotherapists or osteopaths, please ensure you bring a referral letter to your appointment.

After your treatment, you may experience a significant reduction in pain, although this is typically temporary, lasting only a few hours. The most lasting benefits are usually felt around 9 weeks after the final treatment. Following the session, your therapist may recommend a period of rest or a reduction in intense physical activity to allow the treated tissue to respond. Your therapist will guide you on the best course of action to ensure you achieve the best possible outcomes.
